What is this medication for?

This medication belongs to the family of medications known as vaccines. It is used to prevent certain diseases caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in girls and women 9 to 26 years of age. These diseases include genital warts, cervical cancer, and certain abnormal growths in the vagina and cervix that may lead to cancer. The HPV vaccine does not help prevent other types of sexually transmitted infections. The HPV vaccine works by helping the body's immune system prevent HPV infection. HPV infections are sexually transmitted.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed here. If you are not sure why you are receiving this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor.

What form(s) does this medication come in?

Gardasil® is available as:

  • injectable solution (vials)
    • 0.5 mL
  • injectable solution (prefilled syringes)
    • 0.5 mL
Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

How should I use this medication?

This medication is given as 3 separate 0.5 mL injections into the upper arm or thigh muscle. The second dose is given 2 months after the first dose, and the third dose is given 6 months after the first dose. The injections will be given by a health care professional in a clinic or similar setting.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are receiving the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important that this medication be given exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss an appointment for a dose, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

Store this medication in the refrigerator, protect it from light and freezing, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Human papillomavirus vaccine should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the human papillomavirus vaccine or to any of the ingredients of the medication.
