chlordiazepoxide

By Valeant Pharmaceuticals

What is this medication for?

Chlordiazepoxide belongs to the class of medications called benzodiazepines. It is used for the short-term relief of the symptoms of excessive anxiety, apprehension associated with surgical procedures, and for the relief of withdrawal symptoms of acute alcoholism. It works by slowing down the nerves in the brain (i.e., the central nervous system).

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

What form(s) does this medication come in?

Librium® is available as:

  • capsules
    • 5 mg
    • 10 mg
    • 25 mg
Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

How should I use this medication?

The recommended initial adult dose of chlordiazepoxide ranges from 10 mg to 40 mg daily in divided doses. Children's doses usually start at 10 mg daily (in two divided doses) and may be increased to 30 mg daily in two or three divided doses if necessary. It is important the dose be individualized to your specific needs to avoid becoming too drowsy or uncoordinated. For some adults, the dose may be increased to 100 mg daily in divided doses.

Chlordiazepoxide is normally used for a short period of time or as an "as required" medication. It may be habit forming when taken for long periods of time. If you have been taking this medication regularly for more than one month, do not stop taking the medication without first speaking with your doctor. To avoid withdrawal effects, a gradual dose reduction is usually recommended when stopping this medication.

Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember and continue with your regular schedule. If your next dose is in less than 4 hours, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Chlordiazepoxide should not be taken by anyone who has an allergy to chlordiazepoxide or any other benzodiazepines, or any ingredients of the medication.
