oxycodone - acetaminophen

What is this medication for?

This combination product contains two medications: oxycodone and acetaminophen. Acetaminophen belongs to the group of medications called analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers). Oxycodone belongs to the group of medications called narcotic analgesics.

Oxycodone - acetaminophen is used to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

What form(s) does this medication come in?

Tylox® is available as:

  • capsules
    • 5.0 mg of oxycodone and 500 mg of acetaminophen
Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

How should I use this medication?

The dosage varies according to each individual and can be affected by the severity of the pain and each person's response to the medication. The usual adult dose is 1 tablet or capsule every 6 hours as needed for pain. The maximum total daily dose of acetaminophen (one of the ingredients) is 4,000 mg.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Store this medication at room temperature (68°F to 77°F), protect it from light, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Do not take oxycodone - acetaminophen if you:

  • are allergic to oxycodone, to acetaminophen, or to any of the ingredients of the medication
  • have acute or severe asthma
  • have high levels of carbon dioxide in the blood
  • have or may have a condition called paralytic ileus (paralysis or inactivity of the intestines such that food cannot move through the intestines)
  • have respiratory depression
